Our practice tests are designed to help your child become familiar with second-grade ELA skills, reading passages, question types, and multiple-choice test formats.
For the best results, we recommend using each practice test as both a practice opportunity and a learning tool.
Have your child complete the practice test with as little help as possible. Encourage them to read each passage, question, and answer choice carefully.
It is okay if they don’t know every answer! The first attempt helps you see which skills your child already understands and which ones may need more practice.
When the test is finished, don’t focus only on the final score. Pay attention to the types of questions your child missed.
Ask questions such as:
Why did you choose this answer?
Can you find a clue in the passage?
What was this question asking you to find?
Which answer choices could you eliminate?
Look for patterns in the missed questions. Your child may need additional practice with skills such as:
Main idea • Supporting details • Vocabulary • Theme • Author’s purpose • Grammar • Punctuation • Figurative language • Text features
Use the lessons, worksheets, and printable activities included in the program to review these skills.
After reviewing a difficult skill, have your child practice with another test. This gives them an opportunity to use what they learned with new passages and questions.
You don’t have to complete everything at once. Regular practice can help your child gradually strengthen reading skills and become more comfortable answering test-style questions.
The goal isn’t simply to get every question correct.
The goal is to discover what your child knows, what they need to practice, and what to work on next.
